Music Collective (advanced contemporary music ensemble), Orchestra, Concert Choir, A Cappella Choir, Camerata (auditioned choir), Concert Band — this is a fabulous showcase for Brookline High’s top musical ensembles. Don’t miss this rousing extravaganza, with more than 200 of BHS’s finest musicians performing works by Elfman, Gershwin, Berlin, and more. This accessible and inexpensive family evening also offers Brookline’s elementary students an inspiring glimpse of what they have to look forward to at BHS. November 5, 6, 7, 7:30 p.m. Roberts/Dubbs Auditorium Tickets $10 adults, $5 students. The BHS Drama Society is proud to present "Lear," our version of Shakespeare's timeless tragedy, "King Lear." It is set in the world of fashion, where Lear, a woman, is founder and CEO of Queen by Lear. On the eve of her retirement, she distributes the company to her daughters Goneril and Regan, but chaos strikes when her youngest daughter, Cordelia, refuses to participate in this publicity sham. Lear fires her abruptly, as well as her long-time personal assistant, Kent, and Lear's descent into madness begins. Due to the sophistication and violence of the subject matter, this production is suitable only for 8th graders and up. Tickets: $5.00 for students, $10.00 for adults, available at the door. Needs Improvment and BETCo November 12, 7:30 p.m. Roberts/Dubbs Auditorium "WARNING: CONTENTS UNDER PRESSURE" Tis the season . . . end-of-quarter assessments, college applications, and nailbiting sports games. BETCo explores stress and pressure, calling into question whether it's all bad all the time. It has, after all, been around since the dawn of time . . . or at least that's how BETCo imagines it. And what would be better to relieve stress than a little laughter? Needs Improvment actually has a lot of laughter reserved for you. What could be better than that for a night out? Camerata/Orchestra Concert November 13, 7:30 p.m. Roberts/Dubbs Auditorium Join us for first music BHS concert of the year, the annual Camerata-Orchestra Concert, featuring the BHS string orchestra and our auditioned choir, Camerata. The orchestra will perform “Andante festive” by Sibelius and Dvořákís Serenade No. 1. Camerata will perform the spiritual “Soon-ah Will be Done,” a “Fyer, Fyer” by Thomas Morley, Robert Pearsall's gorgeous “Lay a Garland,” and the Ray Charles hit “Hallelujah, I Love Her So.” The concert concludes with the choir and orchestra combining to perform a work by Mozart's teacher, Padre Martini, featuring vocal soloists. Under the direction of Michael Driscoll, the BHS Camerata Choir and Chamber Orchestra perform works by Italian Baroque composers, featuring the first modern-day performance of Tomaso Ingegnieriís Dixit Dominus. We bring this work (arranged and edited by Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka for performances in Dresden) to life for the first time in over 250 years! The program also includes Vivaldi's exuberant Magnificat, likely written for the composer's high school students in Venice. The performance features soloists from the choir. "The group is graduating eight seniors this year, so they are sounding pretty tight!" —Carolyn Castellano, Director Spring Play: "Baltimore" April 6, 3:30 p.m. April 7 & 8, 7:30 p.m. April 9, 3:30 p.m. & 7:30 p.m. The Black Box Come see the premiere production of "Baltimore," a brand new play by local playwright Kirsten Greenidge. Shelby is a busy student with plenty do outside of her responsibility to the students on her dormitory floor, but her plans are forced to change when a racially charged incident occurs on her watch. Suddenly her students demand she take sides. But choosing who to believe and how to act is complicated. Was the incident a joke? Or are its roots deeper than Shelby wants to admit? Does it speak to some part of the American experience which Shelby, despite being black, just does not know how to talk about? "Baltimore" explores the complexities of racism from the perspective of eight culturally diverse students. Following in the footsteps of last year's "Good Kids, Baltimore," this is the second work of a New Play Initiative established by the Big Ten Theatre Consortium.
